Welcome - 06.07.09

Today, we welcome Minister Eric Vickers, a rising senior at Morehouse College and the first Dr. Amos C. Brown intern/ scholarship recipient (see EBC Playbook, GROW section). We, also, welcome the Ushers Association of Brooklyn and Long Island, who will be our guests at the Annual Ushers Sermon on Sun., June 7 @ 3:30pm. Not only will we welcome new people to EBC this weekend, but we also anticipate greeting new people at the following EBC events:

  • RELATIONSHIP WEEKEND: (Free) Game Night for Singles on Fri., June 12 @7pm; ($50 per couple) Amazing Race for Married Couples on Sat., June 13 @10am. *Register in the parlor after each service.
  • VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS): Mon., June 15—Fri., June 19, 5:30pm-8:30pm nightly. (Note: Mon.--Thurs, 7:30pm, I will be teaching a bible study entitled, “Owning Your Own God Story: Sharing Your Faith with Family & Friends”.
  • FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND: On Sat., June 20 & Sun., June 21, EBC will present Manifest, an original dramatic piece (based on my 2007 sermon-series, Letting Dad Out of the Doghouse) at all four weekend services.
  • LOVE ME THROUGH IT: EBC will host a screening of this (free) movie, which is an inspirational, pro-active Christian response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, on Tues., June 30, 7pm, at the Brooklyn Central Library (near Grand Army Plaza).

While we hope to see a number of new and familiar faces at these events, I feel compelled to reassure you of the fact that there is one face you can count on seeing for some time to come: mine. On last weekend at the 10am service, I deviated from my sermonic notes for Portrait of a Promise-Keeper (Num. 23:19), and made a passing comment which seemed to spark a bit of speculation. I mentioned that I think, with varying degrees of frequency, about the end of my pastoral season at EBC. At that time, I am confident that God will introduce my successor, who will take the ministry onwards, upwards. Truthfully, I cannot even remember why I shared my musing about the future of my personal ministry and of EBC, except that I was talking about how God’s providence is always at play for us, personally and corporately. From this remark, some members inferred that I might have made an allusion to the prospect of leaving the pastorate of EBC soon. Honestly, I do entertain thoughts of leaving, but not for another twelve to fifteen (12-15) years. Until then, I’m here to stay!--unless I die or you decide otherwise. You’re still stuck with me! (lol)
