On Sunday, June 17, 2007 – Father’s Day – I introduced a 7-week sermon series, Letting Dad out of the Doghouse, which explored the power and possibility of restoring bruised and broken relationships between fathers and their children. The series also allowed me to bring my own testimony full circle, as I had only met my biological father in July 2006.
After preaching the series, my feelings and congregational feedback suggested that the series still had life to live. It was then that I...

Whether you are new or a veteran at EBC, you know I am a fan of films, old and new. In fact, I’m even a fan of the black and white genre. I remember Greta Garb, a film star of the black and white era, was known for a very memorable movie hook. Placing her hand to her forehead and feigning a faraway look, she insisted in a very melodramatic, hackneyed manner, “I want to be alone….” Later, however, she claimed adamantly and emphatically, “I want to be left alone…” was, in fact, her line.
If...

My first weekend back was incredible! If you were away visiting last weekend, you missed an awesome set of worship services. God was, to be sure, present in this place! At the Connection Remix, for example, we welcomed, with much spiritual fan-fare, several new members to the EBC/Christian family via the rites of baptism and right hand of fellowship. Equally important, Elder Jason Nelson, the Music Ministry, and members of Greater Bethlehem Temple (GBT) of Baltimore worshipped with us. Elder...

I’ve missed you! I’m glad to be back in the USA and—more importantly--glad to be back at EBC. I was on a mission trip to Georgetown, Guyana, where I worshipped with and preached to the St. Paul and St. Mark’s Presbyterian Churches, as a part of the Lott Carey Pastoral Excellence Program. I found Pastor Jameson, my host pastor, and the members of these two churches to be representative of the warmth, strength, and hospitality which characterize Guyana. Prior to this mission trip, my single...

Welcome to Trinity – Youth – Weekend at EBC, the time that we set aside to watch God work through our young people. Watch them use dance, drama, mime, song (from hip-hop to hymns), or some combination therein to glorify God. If you are not careful, you may find yourself having FUN during worship. Led by our Lay Pastor for Youth, Jocelyn Mann, Trinity Weekend is ministry in motion…full speed ahead! Please encourage them with your presence and participation.
Though I am away this weekend, I...

Welcome to worship at EBC on Mother’s Day Weekend! We are glad you have chosen to worship with us. This weekend is, to be sure, a very special moment in our church, city, and country. We pause to spotlight the sacrifice of women whose hands have not only rocked our cradles, but whose hard work has shaped our world: our mothers. Let’s thank God for our mothers, grandmothers, and surrogate mothers, through whose wisdom and warmth we have been blessed immeasurably and unceasingly.
While all...

Last weekend’s celebration of Emmanuel’s 128th Church Anniversary marked another year the LORD has kept us in the kingdom business of connecting people to Christ.
Our thanks to Pastor Haye and the Sacred Arts Ministry for their moving presentation! With glad hearts, we were greeted by Rev. Dr. H. Edward Whitaker, Senior Pastor Emeritus. He presented the Judd- Ogundiran Laypersons of the Year award to recipients Dea. Clara Oliver and Tracey Hughes. Other awardees included Joseph and Carolyn...

I am excited to report that since our last huddle, we have been working diligently to claim God’s Promises as ours in 2009. Please take some time to review the Playbook details and note our collective areas of progress. Though we have made significant strides, and momentum is on our side, there is still much work to be done. As I shared previously, our plan is aggressive and ambitious. However, I also know that with God, the victory is ours. Half of the season is nearly over and there is some...

Welcome to Emmanuel Baptist Church and our Trinity Youth Weekend. This is time that we set aside to be fed and led in worship by our young people, who work under the creative direction of Jocelyn Mann, our Lay Pastor for Youth. We thank God for what He is doing with and through them and we appreciate you being present to experience their ministry through dance, drama, and music. If you like what you experience, and I am sure that you will, I invite you to join us for Trinity Youth Weekend every...
